(CSU)People who use Facebook often have a hard time leaving. But some people can’t leave because they don’t want to.

People are arguing about this company. Some people think they are bad for children, but other people love them. The leak showed the company’s products to be bad, but the company says it is not true.

This is just the latest news story about Facebook’s problems. People are angry because of data privacy, content moderation, and mental health issues. But people still use Facebook a lot.

“One of the hallmarks of addiction is when people continue to do something that they don’t want to do,” Anna Lembke, professor at Stanford University, said. “It’s possible that people may say Facebook isn’t what they want it to be but still use it all the time. Those people might be addicted.”

According to a recent survey, Facebook is one of the most popular websites and apps for adults in the United States. It is used by 69% of people.

Why is it so hard not to use the app if you have decided you are done with Facebook? Because the platform taps into our society’s needs and biological drives. Experts say this.

“When you care about how people feel, they will like themselves more,” said John Duffy. He is a psychologist who works in Chicago. “Even if you can point out that it is not good for them, the emotions win.”

Some people want to spend less time scrolling on the platform. Understanding how the platform draws people can help you.

According to a Pew Research survey, 69% of US adults say they use Facebook.

Wired for likes

Facebook is made for humans. Humans evolved to be drawn to beautiful faces and bright lights. When we see them, we feel an emotional connection. We are wired to want to be with other people. When we join in on the posts that people put up, it makes us happy. It gives us a feeling of reward and happiness.

Dopamine is a type of neurotransmitter. It makes you feel good and can make you move, want to do things, addiction and romance. There is a time when too much of something is good. But it’s not always the case.

Where humans used to have to work hard and have meaningful conversations or experiences in order to expand their social circles, social media has made it easy. They can find people all over the world with a click of a button.

The human brain was not made for these huge doses of dopamine all at once. The world has changed, and the brain is not used to it. But we were made for a world with food, clothes, shelter, and mates that would take years to get instead of just minutes.

When the brain gets an overload, it lowers its own production of dopamine. This is not just a little, but so much so that they need to go back to the source of dopamine.

Lembke said, “With too much of a drug, we enter a chronic dopamine deficit state which is like clinical depression.”

The need to check again

As if we weren’t hooked enough by biological impulses, social media platforms like Facebook provide plenty of social reinforcements.

Duffy said, “It’s as simple as wanting to be a part of the thing.” You will sometimes get scared when you miss out on something. This is because we still want to be a part of it even when we’re 50.

Dr. Duffy said that humans naturally want to know where they belong in a hierarchy, and not just any place will do. “Am I attractive? Do people like me? Am I invited to the thing?” These are the important things that used to matter. Now it’s, “Do I have any new followers and likes?”

On social media, people want to define themselves. They find this happening in new activities happening all the time. “You can’t check in to Facebook for a moment and think you’ve done all your work. It is always going on.” Even when you get a lot of likes, and it is not a good lead, social media offers another chance.

The speaker said, “If you lose today, there is this idea in the back of our minds that ‘Well, I can try again tomorrow.'”

How to break away

Facebook is really popular. Lots of people want to use it. But for those who don’t, there is a way to stop and not use Facebook anymore.

By week three or four, many people start to think about Facebook less and enjoy their activities more. After the month, you should avoid using technology. This includes turning off alerts and using timers. Don’t use the social media apps that make you feel out of control.

If you feel like logging back onto the internet, try to do something that connects you with your body. For example, go outside for a walk or take an ice-cold bath.
