The Biden Administration Continues Its Work to Expand Access to Justice

President Biden knows that getting a lawyer can make a big difference in your life. If you get one, then you might be able to keep your home, stay out of poverty, or help someone with their asylum application. But not everyone can afford to get a lawyer for themselves, so President Biden wants to make sure they can still get a good lawyer even if they don’t have the money. Bad things are happening in the world. There is a disease called COVID-19, and it makes people very sick. Many people who need help with legal problems can’t get it because of this disease.

On May 18, 2021, President Biden issued a memorandum about access to justice. The memo asked the Attorney General to tell the president how the Department of Justice will help people who can’t afford lawyers. The Presidential Memorandum also ordered the White House Legal Aid Interagency Roundtable to meet and think about how they can help people who need legal services. They will be doing this because of COVID-19.

The Biden-Harris Administration has taken steps to change the criminal justice system. They made sure federal law enforcement stopped doing harmful things, and they invested in community-based programs that help people who have been in prison.
