Great Neck, N.Y. Receives $13.8M Wifia Loan

Yesterday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced a $13.8 million loan to help improve water treatment plants in Great Neck North, New York, with money from the Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (WIFIA).

The Watermill Lane water treatment and main water upgrades will make the drinking water better for 32,000 people. This project will include installing a new filter to remove PFAS and 1,4-dioxane from three of the Authority’s wells. There are also plans to install a fire protection system for two of the main corridors in the service area. Together these projects will help ensure that drinking water is safe and meet new state regulations for contaminants.

The EPA will help the city of Great Neck with our water treatment to make it safer for people. This is important because 1,4-dioxane and PFAS are chemicals that can be bad for our health.

EPA is helping the water company with what they need. The EPA will pay for new plants and other important infrastructure so that the water company can meet New York State drinking water standards which are among the toughest in America.

The $13.8 million WIFIA loan will help pay for the water project. It will be used to cover nearly half of the initial costs. The Water Authority of Great Neck North will save over $1.9 million by financing the projects with a WIFIA loan instead of bonds and cash from our pockets. The project’s construction and operation are expected to create 224 jobs, and it is expected that they’ll be completed in 2022 or earlier if possible.
