Orthopedic Surgeon Convicted in Tax Fraud Scheme

A jury found a doctor and his wife guilty of a crime. The crime had to do with their job and taxes.

Dr Rice has owned and operated her medical practice in Pinehurst, North Carolina, since 1992. Over the years, the business has changed its name and location but has still been run by the same employees. The company’s names have been: Sandhills Orthopaedic and Spine Clinic, PA; Sandhills Orthopaedic and Spine Holdings, PLLC; and Orthopaedic Care LLC.

Dr Rice’s wife managed the administrative operations of Sandhills Orthopaedic. She also owned as well as operated her own company that sold truffles. From 2013 to 2016, the couple took $580,000 of taxes that they were supposed to pay. They used the money for other things.

During that time, the couple tried to hide that they were making more money by moving $990,000 from their business to their account. They used this extra money for themselves, including buying a dog kennel and paying for a spiritual advisor. They also used it on themselves in other ways, like joining a country club and renting out their house.

Court documents say that the couple didn’t file or pay their taxes for a few years. Also, the doctor failed to file income tax returns for his company.

The jury found the following about Dr Rice:

  • He had a plan with his wife to cheat the government on taxes.
  • They didn’t pay their taxes in the 3rd and 4th quarters of 2014, but they did in 2015 and 2016.
  • He also cheated by not filing his income tax return for 2014, 2015, or 2016.

The Rice couple has been sentenced for a crime. The first sentence is five years on each count of conspiracy, tax evasion, and employment tax fraud. They also got an extra year on each count of failing to file personal and corporate taxes.
