Newport News Shipbuilding to Employees: Get Vaccinated or Lose Your Job

Newport News Shipbuilding to Employees Get Vaccinated or Lose Your Job

Employees at Newport News Shipbuilding who have not been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by Dec. 8 will be let go. The shipyard’s parent firm, Huntington Ingalls Industries, issued the order three days after the White House declared a vaccination deadline for government contractors.

Approximately 40% of the shipyard’s 25,000 employees are unvaccinated. Two weeks after receiving their final immunization, people are said to be completely vaccinated. Employees would need to have received the first shot of a two-dose vaccination by Oct. 27 in order to meet the Dec. 8 deadline, according to HII executive vice president and chief operating officer Chris Kastner’s email to staff on Monday.

As a result, we need to get started right away so that we can be compliant by Dec. 8, 2021. “While we are discussing the ramifications of this requirement with our union partners, it will be a condition of continued employment for our employees to be fully vaccinated by the above date,” his email stated.

Kastner said that HII’s division leaders would soon tell employees what to do so they could meet the requirement for the vaccine.
