(CSU)The sheriff’s office in Liberty County, Montana, said on Saturday evening that three people had died as a result of the derailment.
Authorities would not say how many persons were injured or how badly they were injured. An Amtrak train composed of ten cars from the Empire Builder service that departed Chicago for Seattle/Portland derailed near Joplin, Montana, about 4 p.m. local time on Monday, injuring an unknown number of passengers, according to an announcement by the railway. The train was made up of 2 locomotives and ten vehicles.
According to an additional statement released by the train company on Sunday, there were about 141 People and 16 crew members on board when it derailed.
“We are shocked and saddened to hear that three more individuals have perished as a result of this tragedy. The train was also carrying passengers and crew members when it met the derailed car. ” “Amtrak is working with the city authorities to get those who were hurt medical care and to safely remove everyone else from the scene,” it adds.
Amtrak has established an Incident Response Team and is deploying emergency personnel and Amtrak leadership to the scene to assist passengers, workers, and their families with their needs, according to the statement.
Individuals who have concerns regarding their friends and family aboard the train should contact 800-523-9101, according to the railway. The (NTSB) has dispatched a “Go Team” to the scene, according to the agency.
According to Amtrak’s website, the Empire Builder travels between Chicago-SPM/Minneapolis-Spokane-Portland/Seattle and offers travelers a chance to “experience the rugged splendor apropos American West.”
