President Joe Biden has defended General Mark Milley, the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff. He has defended him from a controversy about him making secret calls to China in the final months of Trump’s presidency.
I am confident in General Milley, the president said on Wednesday.
A new book written by journalists Bob Woodward and Robert Costa says that General Milley made two secret phone calls to China’s top general, Li Zuocheng. He told him that the U.S. did not want to go to war with his country.
This sentence is about General Milley. He was talking to General Li. The two of them have known each other for five years. If they are going to attack, then one person will tell the other person ahead of time so it is not a surprise.
On Wednesday, a spokesperson for General Milley said that the secret phone calls were not secret. They also defended their actions.
The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs talks to other countries’ Chiefs of Defense. He says, “These conversations with China and Russia remain vital to improving mutual understanding of US national security interests, reducing tensions, providing clarity and avoiding unintended consequences or conflict.”

All calls from the chairman to his counterparts are “staffed, coordinated and communicated with the Department of Defense and the interagency.”
Separately, White House press secretary Jen Psaki spoke up for General Milley too.
The President knows General Milley, who has been chairman of the Joint Chiefs for eight months. He has worked with the President through a range of international events. The President trusts him and believes in him.
Some Republicans are angry over the general’s comments. They think that the general should not have talked about politics. Some people also think he is a traitor to America. Donald Trump said that this general is a traitor, too.
I hope that reports of Gen. Milley are not true. If they are, he is not a hero. He would be acting against the President of the United States, which is an act of treason.
