What Happened on Sept. 11, 2001- how Many Planes Were Hijacked in Attacks

Nearly 3,000 Americans were killed in the September 11, 2001 attacks. The events are considered one of the most catastrophic terrorist attacks on American soil in modern history.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, 19 men hijacked four commercial aeroplanes. American Airlines Flight 11 was one of them; it crashed into the World Trade Center’s North Tower at 8:46 a.m., killing all 92 people on board and an unknown number in the building. Mohamed Atta is believed to be the hijacker who piloted American Airlines Flight 11 into the tower.

What Happened on September 11, 2001: American Airlines Flight 11

The attacks began with the hijacking of two planes that originated from Boston. The first plane was American Airlines Flight 11, which departed from Boston’s Logan International Airport at 7:59 a.m., carrying 81 passengers and 11 crew members. At 8:14 a.m., air traffic controllers noticed that the flight had veered off course.

Sometime between 8:14 a.m. and 8:20 a.m., the hijackers struck the first of many blows with box cutters and knives to the throats of flight attendants, pilots and passengers where they slashed at the people in first-class seats, made their way toward the cockpit and eventually took control of the aeroplane by 8:46 a.m. At this point, American Airlines Flight 11 was only 10 minutes from its target—the North Tower of New York’s World Trade Center (WTC).

The hijackers flew for another 15 minutes before crashing into the North Tower of WTC at approximately 8:46 a.m., killing everyone on board, as well as everyone that worked inside that tower, which may have been a victim of a direct attack from the aeroplane.

What Happened on September 11, 2001: United Airlines Flight 175

United Airlines Flight 175 was the second plane that originated from Boston’s Logan International Airport. The flight was scheduled to depart at 8:00 a.m., carrying 56 passengers and 9 crew members, but actually departed at 8:14 a.m., 14 minutes after its scheduled departure time, because it had a slight delay in getting to the gate. It took off without any difficulty toward New York City, but crashed into WTC South Tower at 9:02 a.m.; killing all 65 people on board along with an unknown number in the building itself who may have been a victim of a direct attack from the aeroplane or may have been killed by debris from one the towers or other parts of the aeroplane’s wreckage.

The hijackers of United Airlines Flight 175 flew the plane into WTC South Tower at approximately 9:02 a.m., killing everyone on board as well as everyone that worked inside that tower who may have been a victim of a direct attack from the aeroplane or debris and may have been killed by other parts of the aeroplane’s wreckage or those people who were in WTC North Tower and were hit directly by American Airlines Flight 11 earlier.

What Happened on September 11, 2001: American Airlines Flight 77

American Airlines Flight 77 was one of the planes hijacked on September 11, 2001; this flight is believed to be the one that hit the Pentagon (see below). It took off from Dulles Airport near Washington DC at 8:20 a.m. The plane carried 58 passengers and 6 crew members. At 8:50 a.m., the hijackers took control of the plane and changed its course, flying toward Washington DC.

At 9:38 a.m., American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington, VA; 125 people were killed in the Pentagon along with all 64 passengers on board. Though it was not hit by an aircraft or other foreign object, but rather by the hijackers who intentionally flew the aircraft into that building to cause extensive damage to anyone who might have been near the impact site as well as to destroy any evidence contained within that structure’s safety which could have led to their arrest for their terrorist activities…

What Happened on September 11, 2001: American Airlines Flight 93

American Airlines Flight 93 was another one of the planes on September 11, 2001; this flight is believed to be the one that crashed in rural Pennsylvania (see below). It took off from Newark International Airport at 8:42 a.m., three minutes after its scheduled departure time, and stayed on schedule before it was hijacked about 46 minutes into the trip. The hijackers appeared only 20 minutes later, taking control of the plane and returning from those who hijacked it at approximately 9:28 a.m., turning around just as they were preparing to resume their course and forcing the passengers and crew members to take over instead.

At 10:03 a.m., American Airlines Flight 93 crashed in Stonycreek Township near Shanksville, PA; all 45 people on board were killed and an unknown number of people in the rural area surrounding where it crashed.

United Airlines Flight 175 was another one of the planes hijacked on September 11, 2001; this flight is believed to be the one that hit WTC South Tower (see above). It took off from Boston Logan International Airport at 7:58 a.m., about two minutes after its scheduled departure time. It stayed on schedule before it was hijacked about 65 minutes into the trip. The hijackers appeared only 17 minutes later, taking control of the plane and returning from those who hijacked it at approximately 8:14 a.m., turning the plane around and forcing the passengers and crew members to take over instead.

At 9:03 a.m., United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into WTC South Tower; all 65 people on board were killed as well as an unknown number of people who were in that area of lower Manhattan when it hit the building.

United Airlines Flight 11 was another one of the planes hijacked on September 11, 2001; this flight is believed to be the one that hit WTC North Tower (see above). It took off from Boston Logan International Airport at 7:58 a.m., about two minutes after its scheduled departure time. It stayed on schedule before it was hijacked roughly forty-six minutes into the trip. The hijackers appeared only 18 minutes later, taking control of the plane and returning from those who hijacked it at approximately 8:14 a.m., turning the plane around and forcing the passengers and crew members to take over instead.

At 8:46 a.m., United Airlines Flight 11 crashed into WTC North Tower; all 81 people on board were killed as well as an unknown number of people who were in that area of lower Manhattan when it hit the building.
